Seizures and Seizure-like Events in the Behavioral Health Setting

Seizures and seizure-like events in the inpatient psychiatric milieu can be challenging to assess and triage. This interdepartmental, interdisciplinary conference aims to help participants differentiate between seizures, convulsive syncope and psychogenic non-epileptic attacks (PNEA), and to identify indications for emergent transfer out of the psychiatric milieu. Guidance will be presented to promote a graduated, collaborative assessment and triage regime.

1. Describe the basic causes of seizures and seizure-like events.
2. Recognize symptoms and signs that are specific to convulsive syncope, seizures and psychogenic non-epileptic attacks (PNEA).
3. Identify signs that indicate the need for emergency treatment during seizures and seizure-like events.
4. Participate in a collaborative interdisciplinary response to seizures and seizure-likes events.
