Overview
The MetroHealth EMS Fellowship Monthly Journal Club is a 2-hour, literature-based educational session held once per month. This conference is designed to review high-impact, recently published EMS and prehospital care literature, with a focus on critical appraisal, clinical application, and system-level implications. The primary goal is to support the education and professional development of the EMS fellow, while also providing high-value continuing education to emergency medicine physicians, EM residents, and regional EMS clinician partners. Sessions emphasize evidence-based practice, fostering discussion on emerging topics such as resuscitation, airway management, trauma care, operational medicine, and prehospital systems of care. Participants will engage in structured analysis of study design, methodology, and relevance to clinical practice, with guided discussion to translate evidence into real-world EMS decision-making. This collaborative forum also strengthens regional partnerships and promotes a shared standard of care across MetroHealth and its EMS partners. Ultimately, this journal club aims to enhance clinical knowledge, improve patient outcomes in the out-of-hospital setting, and advance the academic and operational excellence of the EMS fellowship and broader EMS community.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Critically appraise EMS literature by evaluating study design, methodology, bias, and statistical analyses to determine validity and clinical relevance.
  2. Apply evidence-based findings from current EMS research to inform prehospital clinical decision-making, protocol development, and system-level improvements.
  3. Integrate emerging EMS best practices into real-world care by translating literature into actionable strategies that improve out-of-hospital patient outcomes.

Accreditation
The MetroHealth System is accredited by the Ohio State Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
