Overview
We have developed an ethics based educational series that will take place nearly each month of the year. Each monthly session is based on recent bioethics literature and current bioethical issues relevant to patient care and best practices, often these are identified by the types of consults our ethics consultation service at MetroHealth receives. Given bioethical issues in health care are constantly evolving, our series intends to identify any bioethical knowledge gaps and to close those gaps by featuring professional expert speakers on each ethical topic. Recent examples include ethical concerns of race correction/race based medicine in patient care, ethics.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Analyze complex ethical dilemmas in healthcare, identifying key issues and stakeholders.
  2. Apply ethical principles such as autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice, to real life cases.
  3. Evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies in resolving ethical conflicts.
  4. Synthesize knowledge of patient-centered care and respect for patient understanding and autonomy.
  5. Create a plan for informed consent that prioritizes patient understanding and autonomy.
  6. Analyze the impact of cultural diversity on ethical decision-making in healthcare.
  7. Evaluate the role of teamwork and collaboration in resolving ethical dilemmas.

Accreditation
The MetroHealth System is accredited by the Ohio State Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
